We learn alphabets since we are small. We learn the grammatical theories on every languages. In U, this went off for no exceptions too. I found this on a website and decided to translate it and add/ change some terms with my own understanding for certain words, in the 4 years (as the information from that site is slightly outdated too)
A - Appreciate, Accept, Assignments
Learn to appreciate. At here, I can identify into 2 types: appreciate beauty and appreciate effort. Beauty, is the most commonly found terms in almost all guys and girls - seeking for perfection. Look into handsome guys and pretty girls as where you are. And appreciate any effort that made by your friends, your own, lecturers when they have provided you something, especially knowledge.
You also need to accept whatever might happen to you - lecturer bias, conflict during any activity or works, learn to accept if it is possible, and use that as a lesson that to motivate you - never be such people or let such things happen again.
Assignments. This is a really common term found in a life of U. Assignments here, assignments there, assignments everywhere. Every course that you take will have various assignments that will drain your brain, time and even money. But some assignments helps you to get a ease on the course if the lecturer is nice enough (even the workload is heavy) on giving marks based on your effort.
B - Blogging, BBS
Bulletin Board System (BBS) and blogging is the common thing found in our life of U. By utilizing the technology of Web 2.0, we can do almost everything in just a single social web site. Some people will post every moment of his/ her activity in the site and waiting for comments from others. Some also use it to express anger or whatever it is in their blog, BBS (you can find that in FB where you always comment your status).
C - Corporation, Caffeine
Corporation, or association is the political zone in a U. Like politics, sometimes they join as the member of corporation (known as students association) for service, for fame, or for money. Nobody knows. It is like the real politics. Some of the students wants the special privilege by the association (such as vacation, accommodation and fees) they joined. Some joined because they wants to help others, fight for students welfare. (and there are cases that the student extend his/ her study just to help the students. Rarely happens.)
You know caffeine. Coffee, teas are the vital things for a U students as it can make you lasts longer with its energy value, for dating, gaming or homeworking. It is rare that a U students will not stock any caffeinated drinks in his food case.
D - Discs, Downloads
CD, DVD are the things that you need for your U life. It serves many functions - burn movies for killing the time, or to burn assignments, and even notes from your friends if you don't get any.
Download is the key term for U life. Download notes, download songs and download games, movies, everything as sometimes the notes are found in the BBS of the university. It makes your life easier and let your computer have a longer life span (without infected by virus).
E - Earphone
Earphone is an essential thing in a life of U. On the other end of the earphones are music players for sure. In 80's - walkman and radio. 90's, CD player. Now? MP3 players or even computers that you use will be the key for you to release your tension and not disturbing others - when you wanted to 'bomb' the music as loud as you can.
F - Football, Feloes
Something special in the life of U. Regardless of gender, football is a term that most boys and girls in U that will never miss out. Which club is better, which club got handsome guys, who will win FIFA World Cup and bla bla bla.
Felo, or known as the officer in the hostel. They are stereotype, they are irony, they are horrid. They do the things that other people not allowed to do. Ie: scolding people wear shorts when they are wearing it too. They fear the feloes because of accommodation (they are proud when they see U students begging for accommodation because that is the ONLY time they can show their ‘authority’). Exceptional happens to certain feloes (it is hard to see any good Samaritan nowadays, somehow. Dogs. They thought they will get respected with such ‘authority’. Wrong. Pity these feloes that abuse the authority and no wonder the U students always never respect the feloes because they only know to do something pointless (unless they did a great job). Well, that includes me! Wanna get respected? Try to do something that benefits and helps students instead of showing off that who is the boss and bossy around. Be a role model.
G - Guitar, Game
Two elements that cannot escape in the life of U. Some learn guitar because they said it has extra charisma when you know how to play a guitar, or for relaxing purposes (and creating soundwaves too). Gaming, nobody hates that. From any casual games to heavy games, as a student of U, you will play it to enjoy and release the tension, killing time and also perhaps strengthen the friendship?
H - Hang on the bed, Hostel
The most common term found in all students of U. It does not only regerates your health but at the same time to do some ‘beauty makeup’. People will use various ideas just to ‘have fever’ (and enjoy more on sleeping). At weekends or days that have no classes, you will regain more energy and facial treatment indirectly.
Extra income: Save the money for breakfast, or lunch, or both.
It is also the symbol of a U student, hostel. In order for convenience and the sake of save money (well moving out might be less convenient because of the additional money that they need to spend), they need to follow various unfair treatment and unconditional bias from the ‘upper class’ of the community of hostel.
I - In love
What a U students have? Limitless energy and brainstorming. When it goes to this, a lot of U students will spend most of their energy and thinking on how to get a boyfriend / girlfriend. Items included: movie tickets, boquets, love words, patience. First timer might experience faster heartbeat, blush, stammering, blank at a sudden. When it is mastered, these side-effects will be automatically recovered(?).
We always hear from various sources in a U about improve this, improve that, improve anywhere. Yet until the end of your studies, you still cannot see they improved and they keep on repeating the same thing.
J - Jobbing/ Jobber
Money is important, but finicial is limited. You spent a lot and need some extra funds for any purposes without asking from family? Jobbing. Works included: tutoring, translating, doing assignments, etc. It will not earn a lot, but still will make your life better and even kill some of your free time for something useful.
K - Karaoke
Everybody loves to sing. This is a good recreational activity that suits everyone, and also for stress-release and improves friendship and relationship. It does not require you to be a good singer, but you need to know a lot of these lyrics. Additional materials that might be useful includes: cotton, hammer/ pole, blanket/ pillows. Usage: Repel from ‘soundwave’. When you really cannot stand it, scram or use the hammer/ pole.
L - Lie and Discuss, Loaf
Bragging is the common activity in a life of U. Lie down on the bed, talk everything, includes sex, relationship, school, gossiping, future and even healthcare and gaming.
As a U student, loaf around is also another common activity. This phenomena normally seen in Saturdays and Sundays, and also the beginning of the semester. Loaf even not going to have any purpose, is still good for them, rather than sleeping at the room or when they are doing their assignments or study for the exam.
M - Meal Basin
A rather useful item that not only can get your meal for 'tapau' and saves some of the money and when you want to eat in front of your computer, but also saves your money and environment. Additional functions: as a spot for flies and cockcroaches (when it was not cleaned after use) and also as an instrumental unit, mostly on percussion parts. When it used properly with other containers, it can also creates symphony.
N - Nomad, Notes
Nomading is the lifestyle in a U life especially where I am in. All of us struggle for accommodation, need to endure shitless comments from here, there anywhere. You will get expelled from hostel for even just a small case. They might found a place that is empty and migrate themselves in, a spotcheck, they will get fined and expelled out. Pity them and f**k the system of accommodation (sometimes there have spaces but don't know why they don't accept the students).
U students need to take notes by their own sometimes. When they don't have the sufficient notes, they will ask from their friends (and normally will not give even their friends asked for). But remember to share the notes you have, not only by taking the notes that you get from others. Don't be stingy for sharing for knowledge, especially for those who are going to be a teacher.
O - Old clothes
Old clothes (that does not washed for weeks) symbolizes ‘machoism’ and ‘sexism’. It sometimes labeled as the result of effort and exercise and the lack of time due to loads of activities. With the other ‘sources’, it becomes one of the useful and conventional defense item – smell that other people cannot stand.
P - Plagiarize
Sometimes it is clear that when someone get a dean list, but no one congratulates them. They get the good pointer for plagiarize. It can be easily seen with the help of technology. They don’t study, they don’t learn, yet they get a good result. They are good at copy and paste. Always expect and unexpected moves just in order to fill the result slip with good marks and minimal effort – plagiarize.
Q - Quid of Capital
a.k.a. Short of Money.
All U students face this. They spend a lot till they have financial issues. The frequency of this happen in a U student is way higher compared to a country that faces financial problem. We know the problem, but we don’t know how to solve it.
R - Robbing
This rob is not the robbery. It means to get the seat for the class, foods, transports (Totally unique as a developed country) First come first serve basis. Happens in a lecture room, taking buses, getting assignments and at library or cafes. Various methods used to rob a seat such as dropping a bag, books, laptops, etc. Sometimes, they rob for geographical advantage (like watching nice looking boys/ girls, or have a better sight of copying lecture notes, or the location to escape from the lecture/ tutorial after getting the attendance.
S - Slippers, Sharing
You need it when you go into toilet or the café. Not possible that you will wear extremely nice to the café, no? (Even though the dress code not allowed to do so but who cares?)
As a U student, we should have high moral value. But this term, sharing, is not easily found, regardless what course you are in. Instead of sharing, Stingy is more common term because they afraid to share what they know to avoid competition. But they will ask something without paying back. How sad.
T - Transparency, Tutorial
This term is not the ‘transparent’ of a plastic or a glass. It is how the U system works, especially deal with various hidden rules. Even the way to organize a student council (on certain areas like hostel’s student council) is no more the voting system, but bases on the favor by the feloes (student council that will more bias towards them so that they will have more ‘authority’. Dark side of a U.
This T also means tutorial for a U students. Every week, they will be covered by various tutorials from the courses, except the lectures and assignments. These tutorials sometimes, might have no benefit for the students or/ and lecturers but they still do it.
U - Unaccountable Sadness
In a life of U, it is happy normally. Behind the happiness, there will be unaccountable sadness that varies for any reason. They are bright or serious at a side, but not at the other side. Especially when it deals with stress of thesis and final exam’s result is out.
V - Vacation
Everybody loves this. When this come, they go back to eat family cuisine, date, empowerment for the future courses that they take for the coming semester, or rent a room outside hostel to have happy moments with his/ her friends or for the dating purposes.
For those whose hometown is not near the U, they will spend the time to visit all the places that is nearby, just not to regret that they wasted the time here for nothing.
W - Work deep into the night
Happens on all U students too. The frequency increases when the final exam is approaching, or the due date of the assignment. It was said that work deep into the night will increases the efficiency on the assignments or study better. No proof for this yet.
Sometimes, not only work deep into the night for assignments or studies, but gaming or watching movie, or gossiping.
X - Xenophobia
A common issue in a life of U. Happens among coursemates, lecturers, and the feloes in a U. The preference will more into someone that is either good looking or will totally obey the orders of the lecturers, or feloes. Sometimes happen in dailylife situation or during the voting for student council.
Y - Young
No any U students are old, except for those studied master or higher level. Youth means everything including endless energy.
Z - Zeitegist
Want to find anything popular, the target normally aims on the U students. With the spirit of zeitgeist, everything new will show on a U student. We don’t know how they know that is new, like hairstyle, fashions, but this surely attracts attention from a U students when he/ she spends the life of U.
