Crimes from Cyber...

It is quite shocking when I read the news about cyber crime. We know that this type of crime happens normally but it was never expected that the amount of crime is so huge until around 20k cases reported a day. It is around 0.1% of our population, 24m, and I guess the amount is still counting.

Scans of the newspaper:
News extracted from See Hwa Daily.

I think cyber crime nowadays are not only included for internet but also other things. Even the use of VoIP is also considered as a cyber crime. The phone message that requires the user to put their phone PIN for phone banking is an example. It brings convenience, but it might also lead to cyber crime.

My friend also sends me a message about mobile phone crime. They say the culprit will ask the user to type or key in #09# or #90# for some sort of security reasons. Then, your phone will be hacked (I mean the SIM) and your credit or number will be abused by the culprit.

Another type of cyber crime, where the use of ATM card, the culprit will use the device to put a software to hack through the ATM system, and log the details of users. The culprit will take the identity of the user and make a fake IC (who knows how they did it) and claimed to the telco that their SIM is lost, to issue a new SIM card. The culprit will then use it to log into the bank and the loophole of the security system, where when a new SIM card is issued, the old SIM (even it is not lost) will be deactivated. When the bank asks for TAC, the TAC will be sent to the culprit’s phone instead of the user’s. Through this, they steal the money from the victim’s phone to their own account.

Guess cyber crime nowadays are not limited to internet but anything that relates to the internet. Sigh. We thought people are educated nowadays but the power of greed will make a person inconsiderate and thus they fell on the trap on the scheme of cheating. There are more newer schemes and we should make sure that we are aware on it. In sum, don't be greedy, nothing comes for free!
